Zionsville Hoops Standout Signs with MVNU
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (7-26-2011) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball
team has added an important recruit for the
2011-2012 season as Demetrius Lawson has
signed a letter of intent to continue his
education at MVNU and play for the Cougars.
Lawson,
a 6-foot-1 guard from Zionsville, Ind.,
averaged 16 points, six rebounds, and two
assists as a senior at Zionsville High
School. He finished with 783 career points
to rank 18th in school history on a list
that includes Butler University head coach
Brad Stevens at the top spot. As a
three-year starter, Lawson helped to lead
the Eagles to a 49-16 record that included a
No. 2 ranking in the state during his junior
year. He also helped to lead Zionsville to
the championship game of the Hall of Fame
Classic as a junior. He was a two-time
Hoosier Crossroads Conference First Team
selection and was named to the Hoosier
Basketball Magazine All-State Third Team as
a senior.
"I am thrilled that a
player of Demetrius' caliber has selected
MVNU as the place where he sees himself
becoming the best player, person, and
student that he can become," said MVNU coach
Matt Moore, who will be entering his third
season leading the Cougars in 2011-2012. "He
had a lot of college opportunities because
he is such a dynamic basketball player. I
have had a relationship with him since early
in his freshman year and have enjoyed
watching his growth as a teammate and a
leader take place. He will blend very well
with the young core that we have put
together in our program as we look forward
to the challenges ahead with joining the
Mid-Central College Conference."
"I
looked at a lot of schools and liked a
number of basketball programs, but once I
got on campus and was able to visit a
practice and meet the players I knew I
wanted to play at Mount Vernon," said Lawson
of his college choice. "I love Coach Moore's
style and ability to relate to his players
along with his coaching staff. I think a
smaller school like MVNU will also be great
for me to be involved on campus and help
with my transition to college academics."

MVNU finished the 2010-2011 season with
a 16-15 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the
American Mideast Conference. The team also
posted an 11-3 mark in the friendly confines
of the Physical Education Center. Over the
past 15 seasons, the Cougars have topped the
20-win mark 12 times and have advanced to
the NAIA Division II National Tournament
eight times.
