Lady Cougars to Honor Three Softball
Seniors
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-23-2011) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's fastpitch
softball team will honor its three senior
players after the second game of the Lady
Cougars' American Mideast Conference
doubleheader against Notre Dame College that
has been rescheduled two times already due
to weather and is now slated to start at
3:00 p.m. on Monday at Cougar Field.

Kristin Kurelic, Liz Misich, and
Stephanie Burlew have led MVNU to a 73-73
record over the past four years. During that
span, the team has won one National
Christian College Athletic Association East
Region Tournament (2008) and reached the
championship game of the AMC Tournament
twice (2008 and 2009). The Lady Cougars also
took part in the 2008 NCCAA National
Tournament and finished fourth.
Kurelic, a second baseman from Delaware,
Ohio, has played in 120 games during her
career at MVNU before a season-ending foot
injury forced her to have surgery after
playing in just one game this year. The
former Worthington Christian High School
standout has posted a .346 career batting
average with 56 runs scored, 20 RBI, and 28
stolen bases in 32 attempts. As a freshman,
she was an AMC Honorable Mention pick, an
AMC All-Freshmen Team selection, and an
NCCAA Honorable Mention All-American. A
journalism major, she has posted a 3.97
grade point average and was an NAIA and
NCCAA Scholar-Athlete as a junior and is up
for those honors again this year.
"Kristin played the last three years at
second base and has endured injuries that
finally sidelined her for her senior year,”
said MVNU coach Jeana Howald. "She played
through pain until it completely stopped her
from playing and she has been an example of
perseverance and consistency as both a
student and a person. She will be missed for
her work ethic and hustle no matter the
situation she is in. It has been great to
get to know her and we wish her all the
best.”
Misich, an outfielder from Madison, Ohio,
has seen action in 59 career games over the
past four years. The former Madison High
School product has posted a .253 career
batting average with 15 runs scored, 11 RBI,
and three triples. This season, she has
played in 22 of the team's 24 games and made
21 starts while batting .286. An art major
with a 3.72 grade point average, she joined
Kurelic on the NAIA and NCCAA
Scholar-Athlete teams last year and is up
for those awards again this season.
"Liz is an observer who leads by example and
always has the team above herself,” said
Howald. "The quiet, shy girl who showed up
riding her bike to the field to try out has
developed into a leader. When she speaks,
everyone listens. She has been a coach's
dream, always listens, gives of herself to
others, and leads not with words but by
example.”
Burlew, a pitcher from West Chester, Ohio,
has pitched in 41 games over the past four
years with 29 starts. The former Cincinnati
Christian High School star has posted a
13-16 overall record on the mound with a
3.13 ERA to go along with 16 complete games,
two shutouts, one save, and 68 strikeouts in
185.1 innings of work. This season, she
leads the team with 13 appearances, 71
innings pitched, 28 strikeouts, and seven
complete games as she has posted a 4-8
record with a 2.76 ERA. Another outstanding
student, she has posted a 3.57 grade point
average as an early childhood education
major and is another NAIA and NCCAA
Scholar-Athlete award recipient.
"Stephanie has shown excellent leadership
this year for our young team,” said Howald.
"Like Kristin, she has had her injuries.
After red-shirting her freshman year with a
shoulder injury, she has come back to be an
important part of our pitching staff the
past three years. She has been a strong
example as a role model, student, and
player. She loves kids and kids love her.
She will be an excellent teacher and good
things are ahead for her.”
