Courtney Ricker and Mara
Hughes, two members of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University women’s soccer team,
have been selected as the American Mideast
Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of
the Week respectively for their performance
in matches played during the week of
September 7-13.

Ricker, a sophomore forward from
Marysville, Ohio, had a part in all three of
the Lady Cougars’ goals during the team’s
undefeated week. The former Marysville High
School standout scored a goal and added an
assist in a 2-0 win over Point Park (Pa.)
University. Then, she assisted on the
game-winning goal in overtime in a 1-0
victory over the University of the
Cumberlands (Ky.).
Hughes, a senior defender from
Pickerington, Ohio, anchored the defense
that allowed MVNU to post its first two
shutouts of the season. The former
Pickerington North High School star along
with the rest of the defensive unit allowed
just seven total shots on goal during the
week - two in the Point Park match and five
in the Cumberlands’ contest.
MVNU is currently 2-3 overall and 1-1 in
the AMC. The Lady Cougars will return to
action on Saturday afternoon at noon when
MVNU will host Carlow (Pa.) University in a
conference match.
