Soccer Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (9-19-2009) -
Chris Mast and Alex Stout,
two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s soccer team, were recently
selected as the American Mideast Conference
Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week
respectively for their performance in
matches played during the week of September
7-13.

Mast, a junior midfielder from
Smithville, Ohio, scored three goals and
added an assist in the Cougars’ 6-0
conference victory over Point Park (Pa.)
University. The former Central Christian
High School standout scored the first goal
of the match on a short shot in front of the
net. He headed in his second goal off a
corner kick and then blasted his third goal
in from 30 yards out. He now has seven
career goals and 10 career assists.
Stout, a senior goalkeeper from
Pataskala, Ohio, stopped one shot in the
Point Park match on his way to posting the
shutout. The former Watkins Memorial High
School star has posted five straight
shutouts this year to increase his
school-record total to 31 shutouts for his
career. He also has lowered his career goals
against average to 0.92 thanks in part to
the 0.77 goals against average that he has
posted this season.
MVNU is currently 5-2 overall and 1-0 in
the AMC. The Cougars, who have posted 10
straight home wins and six consecutive home
shutouts dating back to last season, will
put those streaks on the line on Tuesday at
4:00 p.m. when NCAA Division II Ashland
University comes to Cougar Field for a
non-conference match.
