Steve Armstrong, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
soccer team, has been selected as the
American Mideast Conference Defensive Player
of the Week and that National Christian
College Athletic Association Player of the
Week for his performance in matches during
the week of August 31-September 6.
Armstrong,
a junior defender from Mansfield, Ohio, led
the Cougars to a 2-0 record for the week and
the First-Knox Cougar Invitational title. In
a 1-0 victory over Bluefield (Va.) College
in the first round of the tournament, the
former Mansfield Christian High School
standout registered a non-goalie save early
in the second half as he stopped an empty
net goal from being scored. Then, with 40.1
seconds remaining in the math, he assisted
on the winning goal. In the championship
match against Spring Arbor (Mich.)
University, he played stellar defense in the
2-0 win as he went all 90 minutes again and
helped the team register their third
straight shutout. For his efforts, he was
named the First-Knox Cougar Invitational
Most Valuable Player.
On the season, Armstrong has started all
five matches for MVNU and has played all 450
possible minutes on defense. He is the only
player on the team to have logged every
minute.
The Cougars, who received votes in the
latest NAIA poll, are currently 3-2 overall.
MVNU will open AMC play on Thursday at 3:00
p.m. when the Cougars will host Point Park
(Pa.) University.
