For the second time this
season, Mara Hughes, a member of the Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer
team, has been selected as the American
Mideast Conference Defensive Player of the
Week as she was honored for her performance
in matches played during the week of October
19-25.
Hughes,
a senior defender from Pickerington, Ohio,
led the Lady Cougars to a 2-0 record for the
week. In a 2-1 win at Notre Dame College,
the former Pickerington North High School
standout headed in two second-half goals to
rally MVNU for the win. Then, in a 3-0 win
at Daemen (N.Y.) College, Hughes helped
anchor the defense that posted the team’s
seventh shutout of the year. The defense
allowed just 12 total shots on goal during
the week - six in each match.
On the season, Hughes has started all 14
matches and played 1,299 minutes. She has
scored two goals and anchored the defense
that has posted eight shutouts this season.
For her career, Hughes has scored 11 goals
and tallied three assists.
MVNU is currently 9-5-1 overall on the
season and 7-3 in the AMC. The Lady Cougars
will close out the regular season on
Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. conference match
at Cedarville University. A win would give
MVNU a bye into the semifinals of the
upcoming AMC Tournament and the No. 2 seed.
The winner of the AMC Tournament will
receive an automatic berth into the NAIA
National Championship Opening Round on
November 21.
