Tallmadge Golfer Signs to Play for
Cougars written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-26-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's golf team
has added an important recruit for the
2010-2011 season as Matt Wellman has decided
to attend MVNU to further his education and
continue his golfing career with the
Cougars.
Wellman,
a native of Tallmadge, Ohio, was a
three-time All-Suburban League First Team
selection at Tallmadge High School where he
averaged 78.4 strokes per 18 holes as a
senior. He was also an All-District
Honorable Mention selection as a junior, and
he recorded his career-low round of 71 at
the Revere Golf Invitational in 2009 when he
earned medalist honors.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Wellman of his college choice.
"My main reasons are to play golf and to get
a good education. When I came on my visit, I
really liked the campus and the people there
are very nice. Another thing that factored
into my decision was the fact that it is not
too far away from home.”
The MVNU golf program finished the 2009-2010
campaign with a 17-68 overall record and a
ninth-place finish in the American Mideast
Conference Tournament. The Cougars are in
the process of hiring a new coach after Mark
Stiverson resigned at the end of the season
following five years as the head coach.
