Stiverson Resigns as MVNU Golf Coach
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-10-2010) - After five
seasons as the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men's golf coach, Mark Stiverson
has announced that he will resign that
position effective at the end of the current
school year.
Stiverson,
a 1977 graduate of MVNU, has guided the
Cougars to a 243-259-5 overall record over
the past five seasons. The team posted three
winning seasons among the five years
including an impressive 70-35 campaign in
2007-2008 for a .667 winning percentage.
"Coaching golf at MVNU has been a very
rewarding experience,” said Stiverson.
"First and foremost, the quality of the kids
we have cannot be surpassed. I am talking
about individuals with solid character. I
have been blessed in my five years by
knowing several outstanding individuals who
happened to be able to play really good
golf. There were several coaches whom I have
run into who not only commended me on my
players’ character and play, but secretly
wished they had those players.”
"Due to several reasons, I have decided to
resign as golf coach,” continued Stiverson.
"There was no single reason for this
decision, but when they were all combined,
the ‘for’ outweighed the ‘against’. I wish
the program all the success it is due. I
also want to thank the current players for
their hard work and attitudes. Finally, I
wish many blessings on the current players
and all those who have participated in the
program.”
"It has been my privilege to work with Mark
over these past five years,” said MVNU
athletic director Scott Flemming. "He not
only worked toward making our golf program
competitive, but he has been a tremendous
Christian role model to the young men on the
team. He will be missed and I wish him the
very best in his future endeavors.”
A search for a new golf coach, which is a
part-time position at MVNU, will soon be
under way. The Cougars had no seniors on
this year’s roster and should return a very
experienced squad when the 2010-2011 season
rolls around. | |
