MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-28-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team has added an important recruit for the 2010-2011 season as Austin Semple has signed a letter of intent to continue his education at MVNU and play for the Cougars.

Semple, a 6-foot-6 wing/forward from Zeeland, Michigan, averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds per game as a senior at Zeeland West High School. He finished as Zeeland West’s career leader in points and rebounds and was a two-time All-Conference First Team and team Most Valuable Player selection as well as earning a spot on the Holland Sentinel All-Area First Team. He was also a Michigan nominee for the 2010 McDonald’s All-America game. He was ranked as the No. 10 player in the state of Michigan at the wing/forward position by John Stovall’s Prep Spotlight Scouting.

"We have been very blessed to add such diversity to our recruiting class for this upcoming year and the addition of Austin truly shows the depth,” said MVNU coach Matt Moore, who will be entering his second season with the Cougars next fall. "I am so anxious to begin working with him because of his ability to play the game of basketball with such a high level of intensity and understanding. He will be able to play anywhere from the shooting guard position to the power forward and has such great length for a basketball player. He is an outstanding student (3.75 grade point average) and will be a powerful addition to our campus.”

In addition to playing basketball at Zeeland West, Semple was a member of the successful West Michigan Lakers and Courthouse Kings AAU teams. He also coached community recreation league fourth and fifth grade boys basketball teams and plans to become a math teacher.

MVNU finished the 2009-2010 season with a 13-16 overall record. Over the past 14 seasons, the Cougars have topped the 20-win mark 12 times and have advanced to the NAIA Division II National Tournament eight times.
