Fredericktown Volleyball Player Signs
with Lady Cougars
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-15-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
volleyball team has signed an important
recruit for the 2010 season with the
addition of Courtney Briegel, who has
decided to further her education at MVNU and
continue her volleyball career with the Lady
Cougars.
Briegel, a 5-foot-6 outside hitter from
Fredericktown, Ohio, was a four-year varsity
starter and a Mid-Buckeye Conference First
Team and All-District Second Team selection
at Fredericktown High School. As a junior,
she helped lead the Freddies to a 22-2
overall record that included a perfect 14-0
MBC mark and the MBC title. As a senior, she
recorded 144 kills 45 aces, and a team-high
265 digs to go with a 92.0 serving
percentage and a 93.0 serve reception
percentage.
"Lady Cougar volleyball will benefit quality
with the addition of Courtney Briegel," said
MVNU coach Paul Swanson, who is the NAIA's
all-time wins leader (922) and has a 907-308
record in 26 years with the Lady Cougars.
"She is such a quality athlete, volleyball
player, person, and student that we can't
wait to get her here."
"Courtney will help us as an outside hitter
and back row player," said Swanson. "She has
had great coaching at her high school (from
former Lady Cougar standout Marilyn
Rutherford) and with her club team, so she
comes with a lot of experience. She also has
a great personality and will fit in really
well with the values and characteristics of
our team. Having known her forever since her
mom, Lori, is a former player, it is
exciting to finally have her come to MVNU."
In addition to playing volleyball at
Fredericktown High School, Briegel played
two years under Adrienne Delph on the
Volleymasters club team. She has served as
the secretary for National Honor Society and
was a Homecoming attendant this past fall.
She was also named the Elks Student of the
Month in March.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU," said Briegel of her college choice.
"It's a Christian school and the total
tuition was at an affordable rate. I have
always wanted to play for Coach Swanson. I
love the campus and I feel comfortable
there. I also feel that I fit in very well
with the volleyball team."

MVNU posted a 37-10 overall record in 2009,
won the National Christian College Athletic
Association East Region title, and finished
as the NCCAA National Tournament runner-up
for the second time in program history. The
Lady Cougars have won 30 or more matches in
17 straight seasons.
