Nine Cougars Honored with AMC Baseball

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-16-2010) -
Nine members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University baseball team were honored when
the American Mideast Conference awards were
selected by vote of the conference coaches.

Darren Athey |
Steve Williams, a junior outfielder from
Cincinnati, Ohio, led the way for the
Cougars as he was named to the AMC First
Team. The former Milford High School
standout is batting .373 with 11 doubles,
two triples, five home runs, 42 RBI, 45 runs
scored, and seven stolen bases as he has
started in all 53 games.
Kyle Barr, a sophomore right-handed pitcher
from Gahanna, Ohio, joined Williams on the
AMC First Team. The former Bishop Hartley
High School star has posted a 7-5 record
with a 5.00 ERA. In 16 appearances that
include 12 starts, he has thrown five
complete games, one shutout, a team-high 72
innings and struck out a team-best 73
batters.
Darren Athey, a freshman right-handed
pitcher from Newark, Ohio, was named to the
AMC Second Team. The former Licking Valley
High School product has posted a 4-1 record
with a 4.43 ERA and a school-record 10 saves
as MVNU’s closer. In 20 appearances, he has
struck out 11 batters in 22.1 innings of
work.

Travis McInerney, a senior catcher from
Coshocton, Ohio, was also named to the AMC
Second Team. The former Coshocton High
School standout is batting .301 with 11
doubles, two triples, three home runs, 37
RBI, and 22 runs scored.
Matt Parks, a senior third baseman from
Mount Vernon, Ohio, joined Athey and
McInerney on the AMC Second Team. The former
Mount Vernon High School star leads the
Cougars with a .432 batting average to go
along with 12 doubles, three home runs, 34
RBI, and 23 runs scored.
Brian Brockly, a freshman outfielder from
Celina, Ohio, rounds out the AMC Second Team
selections for MVNU. The former Celina High
School star is batting .367 with eight
doubles, six triples, three home runs, 23
RBI, and a team-leading 50 runs scored to go
with seven stolen bases.

Ian Durbin, a junior catcher from Delaware,
Ohio, was an AMC Honorable Mention pick for
the Cougars. The former Buckeye Valley High
School product is batting .292 with nine
doubles, one triple, one home run, 23 RBI,
and 14 runs scored.
Chaz Gibson, a sophomore outfielder from
Lancaster, Ohio, was also named to the AMC
Honorable Mention list. The former Fairfield
Union High School graduate has posted a .319
batting average with 12 doubles, two
triples, seven home runs, 40 RBI, and 41
runs scored.
Josh Roberts, a sophomore first baseman from
Chillicothe, Ohio, also landed a spot on the
AMC Honorable Mention list. The former Zane
Trace High School standout is batting .356
with 10 doubles, six home runs, 41 RBI, and
45 runs scored.
MVNU is currently 32-21 overall and finished
third in the AMC with a 14-10 conference
mark. The Cougars captured the AMC
Tournament title this past week and will
advance to the NAIA National Championship
Opening Round in Cleveland, Tennessee, where
the action will get under way on Tuesday.
MVNU, the No. 5 seed, will take on No. 4
seed William Jewell (Mo.) College at noon.
