Lady Cougars Earn AMC Women's Basketball

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (3-5-2010) - Three
members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s basketball team were
honored recently when the annual American
Mideast Conference awards were announced
after voting by the league’s coaches.

Amanda Himes, a 6-foot-1 junior center
from Hilliard, Ohio, was named to the AMC
First Team for the third straight year. The
former Hilliard Darby High School standout
leads the Lady Cougars in scoring (19.6
points) and rebounding (11.9 rebounds) and
has already set new school records with 332
rebounds and 224 fields goals made this
season while also closing in on the
single-season scoring mark with 550 points.
She is shooting 47.6 percent from the field
(224-for-471) and 60.4 percent from the free
throw line (102-for-169) and has 16 blocked
shots and 24 steals.
Sierra Fletcher, a 5-foot-5 sophomore guard
from Utica, Ohio, joined Himes on the AMC
First Team and was named the AMC Newcomer of
the Year after transferring to MVNU this
season. The former Utica High School star is
averaging 16.8 points and 3.7 rebounds to go
with a team-leading 131 assists and a
school-record 124 steals. She is shooting
37.2 percent from the field (142-for-382),
34 percent from three-point range
(68-for-200), and 79.1 percent from the free
throw line (117-for-148).
Alexis Harkins, a 5-foot-10 sophomore
forward from Canal Fulton, Ohio, was an AMC
Honorable Mention selection for the second
straight year. The former Northwest High
School product is averaging 8.1 points and
4.8 rebounds while shooting 43.3 percent
from the field (58-for-134), 41.7 percent
from three-point range (15-for-36), and 78.6
percent at the free throw line (22-for-28).
She also has 32 assists and 12 steals.
The Lady Cougars are currently 19-9 overall
and finished fifth in the AMC with a 12-7
conference mark. MVNU will return to action
next Thursday at the National Christian
College Athletic Association National
Tournament at Grace College in Winona Lake,
Ind. The Lady Cougars, who are the defending
NCCAA national champions, will find out
their schedule and first round opponent this
weekend.
