River View Runner Signs
with Lady Cougars
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (6-14-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's cross
country team has signed an important recruit
for the 2010 season with the addition of
Katie Worthington, who has decided to
further her education and continue her
running career at MVNU.
Worthington, a native of Conesville, Ohio,
was a four-year letterwinner and a four-year
county champion as a member of the River
View High School cross country team. She won
the 2007 ECOL open race and her personal
best time in the 5K this past season was
23:15. She also took second place in the
female 19 and under category in the
Kellogg’s 5K in 2008.
"I am excited to have Katie joining our
women’s running program at MVNU,” said MVNU
coach Chip Wilson, who will enter his fifth
season in 2010. "She has had some solid
running experience in high school, and I am
looking forward to watching her improve this
fall. In talking with Katie, it is obvious
that she is a hard worker who is willing to
put in the effort needed to be a quality
runner. I am looking forward to the
opportunity to coach her this fall.”
In addition to running at River View,
Worthington was a two-year district
qualifier in swimming. She has also been
involved in the Athletic Leadership Council
and was a recipient of the 2010 Academic
Excellence Award.
"There are several reasons why I chose to
attend MVNU,” said Worthington of her
college choice. "Everyone is so nice there.
I felt like it was a place I would thrive at
and it’s not too far from home.”
The MVNU cross country program was reborn in
the fall of 2006 after not having a program
since the 1979 season. The Lady Cougars have
been competitive in their first four seasons
back on the college cross country map as
evidenced by the team’s results as MVNU
finished 10th at the American Mideast
Conference meet in 2009 and 13th at the
National Christian College Athletic
Association meet. | |
