Plymouth Cross Country Runner Signs with
MVNU
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (6-2-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's cross
country team has signed an important recruit
for the 2010 season with the addition of
Mitch McKenzie, who has decided to further
his education and continue his running
career at MVNU.
McKenzie, a native of Plymouth, Ohio, was
named to the Firelands Conference Second
Team as a senior at Plymouth High School. He
finished as the runner-up in the Firelands
Conference meet and placed fourth at
districts as a senior as he qualified for
the regional meet. His best time in the 5K
was 18:42. He was also a two-time
All-Academic First Team selection.
"I am very excited to officially welcome
Mitch to our men’s cross country team,” said
MVNU coach Chip Wilson, who will enter his
fifth season in 2010. "When I first met him,
I could tell right away that he is a
committed athlete and student. He impressed
me with his ‘never quit’ attitude and desire
to perform to the best of his ability.”
"In the short time that I have known him, he
has showed me that he has a great respect
for his coaches and teammates and is willing
to put forth the effort needed to become a
quality student-athlete,” Wilson continued.
"I am looking forward to coaching Mitch and
watching him grow as a person at MVNU.”
In addition to running cross country at
Plymouth, McKenzie was involved for three
years in student council. He also received a
FFA alumni scholarship and plans to major in
nursing at MVNU.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said McKenzie of his college choice.
"I love the feel of the campus and things
just clicked. The nursing program is great.
I also love how Coach Wilson coaches. I see
myself excelling at MVNU.”
The MVNU cross country program was reborn in
the fall of 2006 after not having a program
since the 1979 season. The Cougars have been
competitive in their first four seasons back
on the college cross country map as
evidenced by the team’s results as MVNU
finished seventh at the American Mideast
Conference meet in 2009 and ninth at the
National Christian College Athletic
Association meet. | |
