Another Gilead Christian Volleyball
Player Signs with MVNU
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (6-2-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
volleyball team has signed an important
recruit for the 2010 season with the
addition of Kelly Mast, who has decided to
further her education at MVNU and continue
her volleyball career with the Lady Cougars.
Mast,
a 5-foot-11 middle hitter from Mount Gilead,
Ohio, helped lead Gilead Christian School to
a sectional and district title and a No. 8
state ranking as a senior while being named
to the All-District First Team and earning a
spot in the Central District All-Star match.
She finished second in school history in
career aces and kills and she set school
record for blocks in a match and aces in a
season. She will join her high school
teammate, Kendra Votaw, at MVNU as she has
also signed to play for the Lady Cougars
next year.
"We are very grateful that Kelly has decided
to continue her education and volleyball
career here at MVNU, said MVNU coach Paul
Swanson, who is the NAIAs all-time wins
leader (922) and has a 907-308 record in 26
years with the Lady Cougars. "She is a first
rate person and student and is loaded with
potential as a volleyball player.
"Kelly has had a great high school career as
a middle hitter and we envision her role
here continuing as a middle hitter, said
Swanson. "We love her natural Christian
testimony, attitude, academic and athletic
ability. She will be a big plus for our team
and they are all looking forward to her
coming.
In addition to playing volleyball at Gilead
Christian and club volleyball for Marion
Volleyball Club, Matchpoint Volleyball Club,
and Patriot Volleyball Club, Mast was an
All-District First Team selection in
basketball. She served as the National Honor
Society secretary, the Student Council Fine
Arts representative, and her class Vice
President/Secretary.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU, said Mast of her college choice.
"Most importantly, MVNU provides a place
where I can grow in my Christian walk. When
I am at MVNU, I feel comfortable and a part
of the campus community. I especially love
the new art facility, where I will be
spending a lot of time because of my chosen
major of Graphic Design and Visual Arts. I
am also very excited to be a part of the
MVNU volleyball team.
MVNU posted a 37-10 overall record in 2009,
won the National Christian College Athletic
Association East Region title, and finished
as the NCCAA National Tournament runner-up
for the second time in program history. The
Lady Cougars have won 30 or more matches in
17 straight seasons. | |
