MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (6-2-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team has signed an important recruit for the 2010-2011 season as Whitney Levering has decided to further her education and continue her basketball career by transferring to MVNU.

Levering, a 6-foot-1 forward/center from Fredericktown, Ohio, will join the Lady Cougars for her final two seasons after playing for two years at NCAA Division II Northern Kentucky University. After playing in 25 games as a freshman at NKU, Levering started 23 of the team’s 30 games this past year and averaged 5.8 points and 3.9 rebounds while shooting 41.9 percent from the field and blocking 11 shots. As a senior at Fredericktown High School in 2007-2008, she averaged 15.5 points and 6.1 rebounds to lead the Freddies to a 25-1 record as she was named to the All-Ohio Second Team and selected as the Mid-Buckeye Conference, District 11, Mount Vernon News, and Mansfield News Journal Player of the Year. She finished her high school career with 1,215 points and helped Fredericktown post a 67-26 record during her four years.

"We are excited about the addition of Whitney to our team,” said MVNU coach Steve Gregory. "Not only is she a very talented player, but she is a local player who had a very successful career at Fredericktown High School. She also helped Northern Kentucky to two 20-plus win seasons. It’s a blessing to get a player of her caliber who comes in with a lot of versatility for her 6-1 frame. She can play the center position which is a big plus, but we really want to move her out and have her play more on the perimeter like she did in high school. She handles the ball fairly well and shots it well. She has good post moves and will stretch the defense in our transition game. She is a very good passer and rebounder and has a nose for the ball. She was a very good three-point shooter in high school and I would like to explore that area of her game. She runs the floor well and she can attack the basket with the dribble.”

"While Whitney brings a wealth of talent to the table, she is also a very good student,” Gregory added. "She has maintained right around a 3.0 GPA and is majoring in Education. I have known her from afar ever since watching her come through Coach Logan’s program at Fredericktown. She had a tremendous high school career and played a pretty big role for NKU this season. She has a lot to learn systematically as she transitions to our program during the off-season, but she is an intelligent kid who I think will adapt quickly.”

"Whitney joins our team at a very good time,” continued Gregory. "We have everyone back and we will have four seniors. Our biggest weakness last year was lack of depth inside, size, and a little more perimeter punch from our forward spot. Those have all been addressed in a big way with the addition of Whitney. For the longest time, she was a big rival with (MVNU guard) Sierra Fletcher (from Utica High School). It will be fun to see those two team up and pool their talents together. Whitney is a great kid who brings strong character and integrity with her. I look forward to helping her reach her full potential as a Christian student-athlete here at MVNU.”

MVNU finished the 2009-2010 season with a 21-10 overall record and a 12-7 American Mideast Conference mark. The Lady Cougars also finished third at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament.
