written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (1-29-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team
has added an important recruit for the 2010
season as the Cougars have signed Josh
Thomas, who will look to further his
education and continue his soccer career at
MVNU.
Thomas,
a midfielder from Beavercreek, Ohio,
recorded 12 goals and seven assists in 17
matches as a senior at Dayton Christian High
School. He was a two-time All-Metro Buckeye
Conference First Team selection and was
named to the All-District First Team as a
junior after leading the area in scoring. He
served as a team captain his senior season
and was an All-District Second Team pick.
"Josh is a great start to our 2010
recruiting class,” said MVNU coach Paul
Furey, who has posted a 240-158-30 overall
record in 20 years with the Cougars. "He is
exactly what we look for in a talented
player, good student, warm personality, and
solid mission-fit to our university. I can
see Josh having an impact right away in
regards to his technical ability although
adjusting to the physical college game may
take a little time He will be a very nice
player over the next four years and is a
great match for our soccer program and the
campus community as a whole.”
In addition to playing soccer at Dayton
Christian, Thomas has played for two
different club teams over the past three
years - Dayton Metro FC and Ohio Galaxies
FC. He is also involved in Student Senate at
Dayton Christian.
"I have always wanted to attend a Christian
college and after visiting Mount Vernon it
seemed perfect for me,” said Thomas of his
college choice. "I loved the atmosphere and
how accepting and friendly everyone was. And
after meeting the soccer team and coaches, I
knew that it was the place for me. It’s like
a family and I cannot wait to be a part of
it.”

MVNU posted a 17-7-2 overall record in
2009 and just missed qualifying for the NAIA
National Tournament after advancing to the
NAIA Final Four in 2008. The team also went
2-1 at the National Christian College
Athletic Association National Tournament in
Kissimmee, Fla.
