Houghton's Shay to Receive Ron Holmes Memorial Award
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (1-27-2010) - Ryan Shay, a member of Houghton (N.Y.) College men’s basketball team, will be presented with the American Mideast Conference’s Ron Holmes Award prior to the conference game between Mount Vernon Nazarene University and the Highlanders on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Houghton’s Nielsen Center.

The Ron Holmes Memorial Award is given each year by the AMC in honor of the former MVNU basketball standout who was tragically killed in a car accident prior to his senior season in 1991. Holmes (left), who is regarded by many as the best player in Cougar basketball history, was just 418 points shy of becoming the program’s all-time leading scorer. He still ranks eighth in career points (1,824) and had the second-best career scoring average in school history at 18.2 points per game. He also holds the school records for free throws made and attempted in both a season and a career.

The Ron Holmes Memorial Award was implemented on behalf of the conference coaches to recognize a player who exhibits the same outstanding basketball ability, character, and academic achievements that Holmes did. The recipient is selected following his sophomore or junior season, and the award is presented at a game during the following year either at MVNU or when MVNU visits the recipient’s team.

Shay, a 6-foot junior guard from Andover, New York, has already contributed heavily for Houghton in less than three full seasons. The former Andover Central High School standout has played in 65 of a possible 70 games during his three years and made 44 starts. For his career, he has compiled 570 points, 159 rebounds, and 98 assists. This season, Shay is averaging a career-best 13.6 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 41.2 percent from the field (87-for-211), 30.2 percent from three-point range (16-for-53), and 70.5 percent at the free throw line (55-for-78). He was an American Mideast Conference Honorable Mention selection last season after averaging 10.2 points while starting 21 of the team’s 26 games.

In the classroom, Shay (right) has exemplified what it means to be a student-athlete as he has posted a 3.64 grade point average as a Math major. He was named to either the Dean’s List (3.5 or above) or Dean’s Honor List (3.75 or above) each of his first four semesters.

Shay is also very active on the Houghton campus and in the local community. He serves on the Campus Activity Board Leadership Team, teaches Children’s Church at Houghton Wesleyan Church, instructs and coaches in the Saturday morning basketball clinic, and works as a Game Host in the Houghton Athletic Department. He also tutors both college students and area school children in math.

"Ryan is a great example of both an excellent student and a dedicated athlete,” said Houghton coach Brad Zarges. "He is very disciplined in his studies and seeks out challenges beyond the minimum requirements. In basketball, he has worked tirelessly to improve his physical abilities and develop his skills. As a junior on a team with significant senior contributions, he has established himself as a leader and captain, mostly as a result of his team-first mentality and work ethic.”

Shay becomes the first Highlander to receive this award in its 17th year of existence.
