MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (2-19-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball
team will honor its five seniors on Saturday
prior to the Cougars’ season finale against
Malone University that will tip off at 7:30
p.m. in the Physical Education Center.

Kyle Harden, Jonathan Gurney, Austin
Kaiser, Travis Brown, and Bryce Sanborn have
helped to lead MVNU to a 83-30 record over
the past four years (.735 winning
percentage). The Cougars reached the 20-win
mark in three of the four seasons and earned
a spot in the NAIA Division II National
Tournament three times. They also won a
share of the American Mideast Conference
South Division title in 2007.
Harden, a 6-foot-4 forward from Canal
Winchester, Ohio, is in his first season on
the varsity team after also playing one year
on the junior varsity squad in 2006-2007.
The former Canal Winchester High School
product has appeared in 22 games for MVNU
this season with three starts, and he is
averaging 2.1 points and 1.8 rebounds.
"Kyle is one of the few people in life who
get to experience what it means to have a
second chance,” said MVNU coach Matt Moore.
"I think being away from the game for the
past few years has given him a great
perspective on what the game of basketball
can do for someone. His eagerness to learn
and grow as a person off the court has been
so uplifting, and I’m thankful for the
opportunity to share in that journey.”
Gurney, a 5-foot-11 guard from Shelby, Ohio,
is in his second season on the varsity team
after also playing a year on the junior
varsity squad as a freshman in 2006-2007.
The former Shelby High School graduate has
played in 24 games this season with two
starts and is averaging 0.3 points and 0.8
rebounds. A standout in the classroom,
Gurney has posted a 3.75 grade point
average.
"There are those people in life that we come
across and we can’t but thank the Lord for
the time spent with them,” said Moore. "This
season, that person has been Jonathan
Gurney. I have truly enjoyed being involved
with him the past six months and seeing him
finish strong in something he has a deep
passion for is a blessing. He has been an
important part of this team and I am forever
grateful for his commitment to not only MVNU
but also his relationship with Christ.”
Kaiser, a 5-foot-11 guard from Milford,
Ind., is in his first season at MVNU after
three seasons at Grace (Ind.) College where
he scored nearly 700 points. The former
Wawasee High School standout has played in
26 games this season and made 10 starts. He
is averaging 6.3 points and 1.8 rebounds
while ranking second on the team with 51
steals.
"I have been so blessed to have coached
Austin for a majority of his college
career,” said Moore. "What I am most proud
of is how God has transformed him through
the years. I am thankful that he has trusted
me and allowed me to walk with him on his
journey.”
Brown, a 6-3 wing from Mason, Ohio, has
played two seasons at MVNU after
transferring in from Fairmont State (W.V.)
University prior to his junior year. After
playing in all 32 games last year with four
starts, the former Mason High School star
has played in all 28 games this season with
20 starts. He is averaging 9.4 points and
3.7 rebounds and is shooting 80 percent at
the free throw line (80-for-100). In just
two seasons with the Cougars, Brown has
recorded 464 points and 185 rebounds. Like
Gurney, he has also achieved academic
success with a 3.63 grade point average.
"I wish I had Travis for another year,” said
Moore. "He is someone whose personality is
as deep as the ocean and who is extremely
passionate about basketball. As he pursues
his future as a basketball coach, I will not
be surprised when the day comes that we are
recruiting against one another for players.
I am thankful for his efforts this year. He
is a true student-athlete.”
Sanborn, a 6-foot-8 center from Dover, Ohio,
has played in 104 games over the past four
years including 91 straight games over the
past three seasons. This year, the former
Dover High School standout is averaging a
double-double of 11.5 points and 10.1
rebounds while shooting 54.7 percent from
the field (134-for-245). Sanborn has
compiled 623 points and 581 rebounds. Also
an outstanding student in the classroom, he
has posted a 3.62 grade point average.
"Bryce was blessed with wide shoulders and
the big fella carried us a lot this year on
those shoulders,” said Moore. "He is the
type of student-athlete every coach wants to
have because he is going to give his best
both on and off the court. He will be a
successful leader in life because he is
gifted in many ways, but most of all he has
a love for the Lord.”
