MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-15-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team has signed an important recruit for the 2010 season as Rachel Walters has decided to further her education and continue her soccer career at MVNU.

Walters, a defender from Jamestown, Ohio, was a four-year starter at Greeneview High School and helped post 48 shutouts in 75 career matches as she was part of four straight Ohio Heritage Conference titles and three district runner-up finishes. As a senior, she registered four goals and three assists while also helping the team to 13 shutouts in 20 matches. She was a two-time OHC Honorable Mention pick and the Most Valuable Player at the Adidas National Showcase in Strongsville, Ohio in 2009.

"Rachel is a quality student-athlete who is going to fit very well with our women’s soccer program, and we are very pleased to have her as a Lady Cougar,” said MVNU coach Daniel Seiffert, who guided the Lady Cougars to their first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament this past season in his first year with the team. "She comes from a rich high school and club soccer background and has the potential to be an impact player at the collegiate level.”

"Rachel is a very smart and technically-sound defender with strong leadership skills,” Seiffert added. "She has a great personality and she exhibits a very positive attitude in everything that she does, both on and off the field. We’re looking forward to all that God has planned for her throughout her career as she contributes to our team and the MVNU community in multi-dimensional ways.”

In addition to playing soccer at Greeneview, Walters has played club soccer for the CJ United Storm for the past seven years. During that span, the team has posted a 165-37-25 record with 10 league titles, seven tournament championships, and six tournament runner-up finishes. She has also been very active in different clubs and activities including National Honor Society, Students Opposed to Drugs and Alcohol, Key Club (including being the treasurer), Sensations Show Choir (including serving as president), All Ohio State Fair Youth Choir, Project CHARLIE, Junior Class treasurer, numerous high school musicals and plays, the Cardinal Chorale, Girls Ensemble, Concert Choir, and Xenia First Church of Christ worship team. She was a four-time OHC Scholar-Athlete and Greeneview Scholar-Athlete and received the Principal’s Good Citizen Award twice as well as the Student of the Month once.

"I have chosen to attend Mount Vernon Nazarene University because it provides me with the perfect atmosphere to strengthen my relationship with the Lord as well as providing me with the curriculum that I need in order to become a nurse,” said Walters of her college choice. "Being given the opportunity to play soccer is also a reason for choosing MVNU. I have played soccer for many years and have enjoyed every opportunity I was given to play. I also like the fact that MVNU is only two hours away from home.”

MVNU finished the 2009 season with an 11-6-2 overall that included an 8-3 mark in the American Mideast Conference. The Lady Cougars, who have won at least a share of four conference titles in the past seven years and have claimed two National Christian College Athletic Association national titles during that span (2003 and 2006), also captured their first AMC Tournament title in 2009 on the way to the berth in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round.
