Cougars Add Goalkeeper for 2010 Soccer Season

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-7-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team has added an important recruit for the 2010 season as the Cougars have signed Ryan Swartzentruber, who will look to further his education and continue his soccer career at MVNU.

Swartzentruber, a goalkeeper from Grove City, Ohio, was a three-year varsity letterman at both Grove City High School (sophomore and junior year) and Jonathan Alder High School (senior year), which he attended only after the Grove City levy did not pass. As a senior, he posted a 1.37 goals against average in 16 matches with seven shutouts and 121 saves as he was named to the All-County Team and the All-District First Team.

"Ryan is a vital addition to our team for next year,” said MVNU coach Paul Furey, who has posted a 240-158-30 overall record in 20 years with the Cougars. "We lose an All-American goalkeeper in Alex Stout, so our next goalkeeper will have big shoes to fill. However, I believe Ryan brings many of the attributes to be an outstanding goalkeeper, and I am excited to work with him and help him develop into a solid college goalkeeper.”

"Ryan is an excellent student and has a friendly personality,” Furey added. "He welcomes the Christian campus environment. He will be a quality leader on and off the field at MVNU before his career is done.”

In addition to playing soccer at Grove City and Jonathan Alder, Swartzentruber has played club soccer for Crew Juniors, Team Ohio FC, and Hilliard FC. He is a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, Buckeye Boys State, and Young Life. He has also served as a tutor and a mentor, attends Grove City Church of the Nazarene, and received the district P.R.I.D.E. award and Star awards.

"There are several reasons why I chose MVNU,” said Swartzentruber of his college choice. "My parents and several family members went there and one of my really good friends signed to play soccer there, too. I love the small Christian campus atmosphere.”

MVNU posted a 17-7-2 overall record in 2009 and just missed qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament after advancing to the NAIA Final Four in 2008. The team also went 2-1 at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.
