Seven Lady Cougars Earn NCCAA East Region Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-26-2010) - Seven members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team were recently honored when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region awards were announced.

Michelle Gastin (left), a senior first baseman from Mount Vernon, Ohio, headlined the list for the Lady Cougars as she was named the NCCAA East Region Player of the Year after being selected to the NCCAA East Region Team for the third time in her career. The former Mount Vernon High School standout leads MVNU with a .414 batting average, four home runs, and 19 RBI to go with five doubles and 12 runs scored. She has also posted 235 putouts at first base and committed just three errors in 246 fielding chances.

Lauretta Wallace, a senior outfielder from Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, joined Gastin on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Canon McMillan High School product is batting .387 with a team-leading nine doubles, one triple, 10 RBI, and 11 runs scored.

MacKenzie Shaw, a sophomore outfielder from Mount Vernon, Ohio, was also named to the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Mount Vernon High School star is batting .301 with two doubles, six RBI, and 12 runs scored to go with a team-high five outfield assists.

Jill Wildermuth, a freshman right-handed pitcher from DeGraff, Ohio, rounded out the MVNU contingent on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Indian Lake High School standout has posted a 6-6 record on the mound with a 2.88 ERA. In 85 innings of work, she has struck out 31 batters while tossing 10 complete games and three shutouts.

Tasha Konkle, a senior shortstop from Urbana, Ohio, was selected to the NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention list. The former West Liberty-Salem High School star is currently batting .360 with five doubles, one triple, 14 RBI, and 15 runs scored while committing just seven errors in 156 fielding chances at shortstop.

Caitlin Murphy, a senior catcher from Gahanna, Ohio, joined Konkle as an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former Gahanna Lincoln High School star is batting .245 with four doubles, one home run, 15 RBI, and 12 runs scored. She has also thrown out 12 of the 26 base runners who have tried to steal on her and has picked off five others.

Kaylee Hewitt, a freshman designated player from Alanson, Michigan, was also an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention selection in her first collegiate season. The former Harbor Light Christian School product is batting .345 with two doubles, two home runs, 16 RBI, and 15 runs scored.

MVNU is currently 13-18 overall and 5-9 in the American Mideast Conference. The Lady Cougars will return to action on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. when the team hosts Ursuline College in an AMC doubleheader. The six seniors on the MVNU squad will be honored after the second game.
