Big Walnut Defender Signs to Play with
Lady Cougars
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-23-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer
team has signed an important recruit for the
2010 season as Jackie Mourne has decided to
further her education and continue her
soccer career at MVNU.
Mourne,
a defender from Sunbury, Ohio, was a
four-year varsity starter at Big Walnut High
School. As a senior, she started all 18
matches and helped the team post three
shutouts while also scoring seven goals to
go with one assist. After being named to the
Ohio Capital Conference Second Team as a
junior as her team won the conference title,
Mourne was named to the OCC First Team and
selected to play on the Division I All-Star
Team while serving as a team captain and
being named her team’s Most Valuable Player.
"We are glad that Jackie has chosen MVNU and
the Lady Cougars to further her educational
and soccer careers,” said MVNU coach Daniel
Seiffert, who guided the Lady Cougars to
their first-ever appearance in the NAIA
National Tournament this past season in his
first year with the team. "She is a fine
student-athlete who works hard and has a
great heart for serving others. She’ll fit
in very well with our program.”
"Jackie’s defensive skills are sound and her
ability to play driven balls and to perform
well in 1-v-1 situations in the back line
will serve her well at the collegiate
level,” Seiffert added. "We are looking
forward to all that God has planned for her
as she develops throughout her college
career.”
In
addition to playing soccer for Big Walnut,
Mourne has played on the Blast FC team since
2002 that has won various tournaments
including most recently the Middletown
Tournament title. She has also been active
in Teen Advisors, FFA, Developing Student
Leaders, and Pet Pals.
"There are many different reasons why I
chose MVNU,” said Mourne of her college
choice. "I wanted to go somewhere with a
good Christian atmosphere and great people.
The soccer program at MVNU is also very
strong, and I am more than excited to
continue my soccer career there.”
MVNU finished the 2009 season with an 11-6-2
overall that included an 8-3 mark in the
American Mideast Conference. The Lady
Cougars, who have won at least a share of
four conference titles in the past seven
years and have claimed two National
Christian College Athletic Association
national titles during that span (2003 and
2006), also captured their first AMC
Tournament title in 2009 on the way to the
berth in the NAIA National Tournament
Opening Round.
