MVNU Women's Soccer Team Signs CVCA
Standout
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-7-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer
team has signed an important recruit for the
2010 season as Rachel Coyne has decided to
further her education and continue her
soccer career at MVNU.
Coyne, a forward from Sagamore Hills, Ohio,
was a four-year varsity starter and all-time
leading scorer with 48 goals at Cuyahoga
Valley Christian Academy. As a senior, she
scored 14 goals and added 10 assists in 19
matches as she was named to the All-District
First Team and selected as the Tri-County
League Player of the Year as well as earning
All-Ohio accolades. The two-time team Most
Valuable Player also set the school record
for points in a season and in a career.
"We are excited to have Rachel as part of
the Lady Cougars’ soccer program,” said MVNU
coach Daniel Seiffert, who guided the Lady
Cougars to their first-ever appearance in
the NAIA National Tournament this past
season in his first year with the team. "She
is a quality person and a fine
student-athlete who has excelled both on the
field and in the classroom. Her technical
soccer skills are strong and she combines
those very effectively with great field
vision. She also has a real knack for
finding the goal as evidenced by the fact
that she is the all-time leading goal scorer
and points producer for CVCA.”
"Rachel has been very successful at both the
high school and club levels,” Seiffert
continued. "We’re looking forward to her
contributing to our team, to her overall
development as part of the MVNU community,
and to all that God has planned for her
throughout her collegiate career.”
In addition to playing soccer at CVCA, Coyne
has played for Cleveland FC, was an MRL
state cup finalist with the Cleveland
Cobras, and was a national tournament
participant with the Cleveland Whitecaps as
part of her extensive club soccer
experience. She has been active in Spanish
Club and Future Business Leaders of America
and received the Book Award in English.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Coyne of her college choice. "I
like the conservative, Christian
environment. There is also a strong program
in my intended major, and the strong soccer
program with a nice coach and players were
big attractions.”
MVNU finished the 2009 season with an 11-6-2
overall that included an 8-3 mark in the
American Mideast Conference. The Lady
Cougars, who have won at least a share of
four conference titles in the past seven
years and have claimed two National
Christian College Athletic Association
national titles during that span (2003 and
2006), also captured their first AMC
Tournament title in 2009 on the way to the
berth in the NAIA National Tournament
Opening Round.
