MVNU Men's Soccer Team to Host First-Knox Invitational
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (9-3-2008) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team will host the 22nd annual First-Knox Cougar Invitational on Friday and Saturday with two matches being played each day.

The host Cougars (0-2) will take on Manhattan Christian (Kan.) College at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and will be looking for their first win of the season after two tough matches on the road at the Bryan (Tenn.) College Classic over the weekend against the host Lions and Campbellsville (Ky.) University. Senior forward Adam Worrall registered a goal in each match for MVNU, and sophomore forward Rockey Cane also scored once.

Meanwhile, the Crusaders of Manhattan Christian will enter the tournament with a 1-0 record after blanking Colorado Christian University 2-0 on Monday. The Crusaders posted a 23-3 overall record in 2007 and won their second National Christian College Athletic Association Division II national title in the past three years.

The first match on Friday will feature Nyack (N.Y.) College taking on Asbury (Ky.) College at 2:00 p.m. The Warriors of Nyack are currently 1-0-1 after a 1-1 double overtime draw with Bloomsburg (N.J.) University and a 3-2 victory over Kutztown (Pa.) University this past weekend. Daniel Ocampo has scored three of Nyack’s goals this season with Samuel Oduro registering the other one. Asbury will enter play with a 1-0 record after knocking off Hanover (Ind.) College 1-0 last Friday in the Eagles’ season opener.

“We are looking forward to another great weekend of soccer,” said MVNU head coach Paul Furey. “There should be two competitive matches on Friday followed by the four teams eating together and fellowshipping on Friday evening. That has been one of the nice features of this tournament.”

“First-Knox National Bank has been a great partner with our men’s soccer program over the years,” Furey continued. “Barb Barry and the marketing people at First-Knox do so many things for our community. We are glad they have teamed up with us for so many years and have helped us sponsor a first-rate soccer tournament.”

On Saturday, the consolation match of the tournament will take place at 1:00 p.m. as the losers from each of Friday’s matches will square off followed by the championship match at 3:00 p.m. An all-tournament team will also be announced following the championship match.
