The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s soccer team has signed
its first recruit for the 2009 season as
Stacy Culbertson has decided to further her
education and continue her soccer career at
MVNU.
Culbertson,
a defender from Delaware, Ohio, is a
four-year member and three-year starter on
the varsity team at Olentangy High School.
She registered seven goals as a junior and
was named the Most Improved Player on her
team in 2006 as well as being named to the
All-County Honorable Mention list. She is
well-known in the Ohio Capital Conference
for her flip throw-ins. She is also a
four-year scholar-athlete award recipient.
“Stacy is a great addition to the Lady
Cougars,” said MVNU head coach Jonathan
Meade, who in his ninth season with the Lady
Cougars has posted a 122-58-6 overall
record. “We are very happy about her
commitment. She has the personality,
character, and work ethic to fit in very
well with our program. I expect that she
will come in and compete immediately at one
of our back positions. She is a strong
tackler and is also someone who can help us
build out of the back.”
“Stacy has done a great job in the
classroom and will add to the academic
excellence that we strive for within our
team,” added Meade. “She also cares about
her faith and wants to be in an environment
that stresses faith as the foundation of who
we are. I am excited for both Stacy and our
university.”
In addition to playing soccer at
Olentangy, Culbertson played for the
Worthington United Soccer Club on the boys’
team for two years. She has also played for
the Olentangy Classics (formerly the
Delaware County Soccer Club) for four years
under coaches Mike Lentz and Bobby Barnes.
Among her many involvements, she is a
member of National Honor Society, Service
Club, marching band, and concert band. She
has also served as a BKOM freshmen mentor,
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
facilitator, Sunday School teacher, Upward
Basketball coach and volunteer, and peer
tutor.
“I am very excited to play soccer for
Coach Meade,” said Culbertson. “I had talked
with other college coaches about playing
soccer for them, but when I met Coach Meade
and the players I just felt like this was
where God wanted me to be. Everything about
MVNU appeals to me. I am able to pursue my
lifelong dream of becoming a teacher, play
soccer, keep God in the center of my
education, and remain close to home while
attending an excellent Christian
university.”

MVNU is currently 4-5-0 overall and 2-2-0
in the American Mideast Conference. The Lady
Cougars have won at least a share of four
conference titles in the past five years and
have claimed two National Christian College
Athletic Association national titles during
that span (2003 and 2006).
