Jenessa Loewen, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
soccer team, has been selected as the NAIA
National Defensive Player of the Week for
her efforts in matches during the week of
September 29-October 5. She was also
selected as the American Mideast Conference
Defensive Player of the Week for the same
time frame.
Loewen,
a sophomore goalkeeper from Gravenhurst,
Ontario, led the Lady Cougars to a 1-0-1
record for the week as she posted a pair of
shutouts in conference play. She stopped
eight shots over 110 minutes in a double
overtime scoreless draw at seven-time
defending conference champion Houghton
(N.Y.) College as MVNU held the Highlanders
scoreless at home for the first time in
conference play since October 10, 2001. She
also posted five saves in a 2-0 shutout at
Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College as the Lady
Raiders were shutout for just the third time
this year.
On the season, Loewen has played in 11 of
the Lady Cougars’ 12 matches and made 10
starts in goal. She has posted three
straight shutouts and has now gone 346:10
since allowing a goal. The former
Gravenhurst High School standout has posted
a 1.29 goals against average and has
registered 53 saves.
MVNU is currently 6-5-1 overall and 4-2-1
in the AMC. The Lady Cougars, who are 4-0-1
in their last five matches, will return to
action on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
when they will host Point Park (Pa.)
University in a conference match.
