MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (10-7-2008) - Jenessa Loewen, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team, has been selected as the NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in matches during the week of September 29-October 5. She was also selected as the American Mideast Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the same time frame.

Loewen, a sophomore goalkeeper from Gravenhurst, Ontario, led the Lady Cougars to a 1-0-1 record for the week as she posted a pair of shutouts in conference play. She stopped eight shots over 110 minutes in a double overtime scoreless draw at seven-time defending conference champion Houghton (N.Y.) College as MVNU held the Highlanders scoreless at home for the first time in conference play since October 10, 2001. She also posted five saves in a 2-0 shutout at Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College as the Lady Raiders were shutout for just the third time this year.

On the season, Loewen has played in 11 of the Lady Cougars’ 12 matches and made 10 starts in goal. She has posted three straight shutouts and has now gone 346:10 since allowing a goal. The former Gravenhurst High School standout has posted a 1.29 goals against average and has registered 53 saves.

MVNU is currently 6-5-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the AMC. The Lady Cougars, who are 4-0-1 in their last five matches, will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. when they will host Point Park (Pa.) University in a conference match.
