written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (10-1-2008) - Mara Hughes, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team, has been selected as the American Mideast Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in matches during the week of September 22-28.

Hughes, a junior defender from Pickerington, Ohio, led the Lady Cougars to a 2-0 record for the week as the defense posted one shutout and allowed just one goal in the two matches, eight total shots, and two shots on goal. After a 4-1 win at Carlow (Pa.) University to start the week, the former Pickerington North High School standout scored two goals - one off a corner kick and one on a penalty kick - in a 4-0 win at Shawnee State University as MVNU posted its second shutout of the season.

On the year, Hughes has started all 10 matches for the Lady Cougars and has scored three goals while helping to anchor the MVNU back line that has allowed a 1.48 goals against average so far. Hughes has now scored six career goals to go along with two career assists as she has played in 45 career matches with 43 starts.

The Lady Cougars are currently 5-5-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the AMC. MVNU will return to action on Friday at 4:00 p.m. when the team will travel to Houghton (N.Y.) College for a meeting with the Highlanders, who are a perennial power in the AMC and who received votes in the latest NAIA poll and just missed cracking the Top 25.
