Mara Hughes, a member of the
Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
soccer team, has been selected as the
American Mideast Conference Defensive Player
of the Week for her performance in matches
during the week of September 22-28.
Hughes,
a junior defender from Pickerington, Ohio,
led the Lady Cougars to a 2-0 record for the
week as the defense posted one shutout and
allowed just one goal in the two matches,
eight total shots, and two shots on goal.
After a 4-1 win at Carlow (Pa.) University
to start the week, the former Pickerington
North High School standout scored two goals
- one off a corner kick and one on a penalty
kick - in a 4-0 win at Shawnee State
University as MVNU posted its second shutout
of the season.
On the year, Hughes has started all 10
matches for the Lady Cougars and has scored
three goals while helping to anchor the MVNU
back line that has allowed a 1.48 goals
against average so far. Hughes has now
scored six career goals to go along with two
career assists as she has played in 45
career matches with 43 starts.
The Lady Cougars are currently 5-5-0
overall and 3-2-0 in the AMC. MVNU will
return to action on Friday at 4:00 p.m. when
the team will travel to Houghton (N.Y.)
College for a meeting with the Highlanders,
who are a perennial power in the AMC and who
received votes in the latest NAIA poll and
just missed cracking the Top 25.
