MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (11-5-2008) - Chris Mast, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team, was recently honored when the ESPN The Magazine® Academic All-District IV College Division Teams were announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Mast, a junior midfielder from Smithville, Ohio, has started all 18 matches for the Cougars this season and has recorded one goal and six assists. The former Central Christian High School star has posted a 3.88 grade point average in the classroom where he is an accounting and financial management double major. He was the top midfielder selected to the ESPN The Magazine® Academic All-District Second Team after being the lone sophomore on the ESPN The Magazine® Academic All-District First Team last year.

The ESPN The Magazine® Academic All-District IV College Division teams are selected by members of CoSIDA. Eligible student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 grade point average and be at least in their sophomore year. The District IV College Division is made up of NCAA Division II and III and NAIA schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee.

MVNU is currently 13-3-2 overall and ranked No. 25 in the latest NAIA national poll - the first time in school history that the Cougars have cracked the Top 25. The team finished second in the American Mideast Conference regular-season standings with an 8-1-2 conference mark and will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming AMC Tournament that starts with first round matches this Saturday. MVNU will host the winner of Saturday’s match between No. 3 seed University of Rio Grande and No. 6 seed Houghton (N.Y.) College in a semifinal match next Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. This will be the Cougars’ first-ever NAIA postseason home match. The winner of the AMC Tournament will advance on to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round on November 22.
