Chris Mast, a member of the
Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
soccer team, was recently honored when the
ESPN The Magazine® Academic All-District IV
College Division Teams were announced by the
College Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA).
Mast,
a junior midfielder from Smithville, Ohio,
has started all 18 matches for the Cougars
this season and has recorded one goal and
six assists. The former Central Christian
High School star has posted a 3.88 grade
point average in the classroom where he is
an accounting and financial management
double major. He was the top midfielder
selected to the ESPN The Magazine® Academic
All-District Second Team after being the
lone sophomore on the ESPN The Magazine®
Academic All-District First Team last year.
The ESPN The Magazine® Academic
All-District IV College Division teams are
selected by members of CoSIDA. Eligible
student-athletes must have at least a 3.30
grade point average and be at least in their
sophomore year. The District IV College
Division is made up of NCAA Division II and
III and NAIA schools in Alabama, Kentucky,
Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee.
MVNU is currently 13-3-2 overall and
ranked No. 25 in the latest NAIA national
poll - the first time in school history that
the Cougars have cracked the Top 25. The
team finished second in the American Mideast
Conference regular-season standings with an
8-1-2 conference mark and will be the No. 2
seed in the upcoming AMC Tournament that
starts with first round matches this
Saturday. MVNU will host the winner of
Saturday’s match between No. 3 seed
University of Rio Grande and No. 6 seed
Houghton (N.Y.) College in a semifinal match
next Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. This will be the
Cougars’ first-ever NAIA postseason home
match. The winner of the AMC Tournament will
advance on to the NAIA National Tournament
Opening Round on November 22.
