Rachel Fiely, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
basketball team, has been selected as the
American Mideast Conference Player of the
Week for her performance during the week on
November 17-23.
Fiely,
a 5-foot-7 senior guard from Greenville,
Ohio, led the Lady Cougars to a 3-0 week
that included winning the Bluffton
University Tip-off Tournament as she
averaged 20.7 points, 8.0 assists, 4.0
steals, and 3.0 rebounds per game. The
former Greenville High School standout shot
43.1 percent from the field (22-for-51),
33.3 percent from three-point range
(6-for-18), and 70.6 percent from the free
throw line (12-for-17).
Fiely began the week with 21 points, nine
assists, and four steals in a 77-63 win over
previously unbeaten Defiance College as she
became the program’s career assists leader
in the process. She added 14 points, four
assists, and four rebounds in a 77-49
victory over Thiel (Pa.) College in the
first round of the Bluffton Tournament.
Then, she poured in a career-high 27 points
to go with 11 assists, five steals, and four
rebounds in a 99-67 win over previously
unbeaten Bluffton in the championship game
of the tournament as she was named the Most
Valuable Player.
On the season, Fiely leads the Lady
Cougars with 39 assists and 22 steals while
ranking second in scoring at 14.7 points per
game. She is shooting 35.7 percent from the
field (30-for-84), 25.7 percent from
three-point range (9-for-35), and 73.1
percent from the free throw line
(19-for-26).
For her career, Fiely ranks first in
school history in assists (444), fourth in
steals (244), fifth in free throws made
(303), sixth in three-pointers made (134),
and eighth in points (1,163). She is the
only player in program history to record
more than 1,000 points, 400 rebounds, and
400 assists.
MVNU is currently 6-0 on the season. The
Lady Cougars will return to action on
Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. CST when
they take on host Trinity International
(Ill.) University in the second day of the
TIU Thanksgiving Classic. That game can be
