MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (11-29-2008) - Ben Falkenberg, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team, was recently selected as the American Mideast Conference Player of the Week for his performance during the week of November 17-23.

Falkenberg, a 5-foot-11 senior guard from Wadsworth, Ohio, averaged 26.0 points, 6.0 assists, and 1.0 rebounds during the Cougars’ 2-1 week that included winning the North Central (Ill.) College Tip-off Tournament title. The former Wadsworth High School star shot 56.8 percent from the field (25-for-44), 48.3 percent from three-point range (14-for-29), and made all 14 of his free throw attempts.

Falkenberg began the week with a season-high 39 points - his 12th career game of 30 points or more - and a career-high eight assists in a 109-99 loss at unbeaten NCAA Division II Ashland University. He opened the North Central Tournament with 11 points and three assists in just 20 minutes in a 99-59 win over Saint Mary’s (Minn.) University. Then, he poured in 28 points (including 21 in the decisive second half to open up what was a two-point halftime lead) with seven assists in a 91-75 victory over North Central as he was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

On the season, Falkenberg leads MVNU in scoring (22.6 ppg), three-pointers made (27), assists (32), and free throw percentage (96.7 percent). He is shooting 54.3 percent from the field (51-for-94), 46.6 percent from three-point range (27-for-58), and has gone 29-for-30 at the free throw line. His only free throw miss of the season snapped a streak of 36 straight made free throws dating back to last season that also tied the school record previously set by Andy Dunn during the 2003-2004 season.

For his career, Falkenberg has moved into third place in school history in career scoring with 2,155 points. He also ranks third in career three-pointers made (381), third in career free throws made (360), and ninth in career field goals made (707).

MVNU is currently 5-2 overall on the season. The Cougars, who were ranked No. 3 in the NAIA Division II preseason poll, will return to action on Tuesday when MVNU will host Ohio Dominican University in a non-conference game that will tip off at 7:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Center.
