Six members of the Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch
softball team were honored recently when the
American Mideast Conference awards were
announced.
Candace White, a senior pitcher from
Gahanna, Ohio, highlighted the list for the
Lady Cougars as she was named to the AMC
First Team and selected as the AMC Pitcher
of the Year. The former Gahanna Lincoln High
School star posted a 20-12 record on the
mound with a 1.80 ERA. She set school
records with 37 appearances, 198.2 innings
pitched, and 146 strikeouts. She also tossed
24 complete games in 26 starts with four
shutouts.
MacKenzie Shaw, a freshman outfielder
from Mount Vernon, Ohio, was named to the
AMC Second Team and the AMC All-Freshmen
Team. The former Mount Vernon High School
product posted a .341 batting average in her
first collegiate season with one triple,
eight RBI, and a team-high 26 runs scored.
Leslie Banichar, a junior outfielder from
Shelby, Ohio, was an AMC Honorable Mention
pick. The former Shelby High School graduate
led the Lady Cougars with a .347 batting
average this year to go with eight doubles,
three triples, two home runs, 19 RBI, and 21
runs scored.
Michelle Gastin, a junior first baseman
from Mount Vernon, Ohio, was also an AMC
Honorable Mention selection. The former
Mount Vernon High School standout posted a
.342 batting average with a team-leading 12
doubles and 25 RBI. She also committed just
four errors in 280 fielding attempts.
Tasha Konkle, a junior shortstop from
Urbana, Ohio, was another AMC Honorable
Mention pick. The former West Liberty-Salem
High School star posted a .333 batting
average with five doubles, 15 RBI, and 23
runs scored. She also committed just six
errors in 154 fielding chances at shortstop.
Caitlin Murphy, a junior catcher from
Gahanna, Ohio, was the fourth and final Lady
Cougars on the AMC Honorable Mention list.
The former Gahanna Lincoln High School
product finished with a .333 batting average
with 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs,
25 RBI, and 24 runs scored. She also threw
out 13 of the 33 base runners who tried to
steal and did not have a passed ball on the
year.
MVNU finished the 2009 season with a
22-17 overall record. The Lady Cougars, who
were fourth in the AMC regular season
standings with a 12-8 conference mark,
advanced all the way to the championship
game of the AMC Tournament for the second
straight year.
