The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s volleyball team has added
an important recruit for the 2009 season
with the addition of Lauren Percival, who
has decided to further her education at MVNU
and continue her volleyball career with the
Lady Cougars.
Percival,
a 5-foot-8 setter from Elyria, Ohio,
compiled 520 assists, 137 digs, 70 kills,
and 28 aces with a 96.6 serving percentage
as a senior at Amherst Steele High School.
She was a two-time All-Conference performer
and a three-time All-Lorain County honoree.
The three-year varsity letterwinner and
two-year captain helped her team to two
district runner-up finishes, one conference
title, one district championship, and one
regional runner-up finish.
"We are extremely happy to add Lauren to
our team next fall,” said MVNU coach Paul
Swanson, who is the NAIA’s all-time wins
leader (885) and has an 870-298 record in 25
years with the Lady Cougars. "She is a
high-energy, high-talent person who really
meshes with our team. She is a very talented
athlete and player who has had excellent
preparation in high school and club
volleyball to be ready to compete next
fall.”
"Lauren is also an outstanding student
with an energetic, outgoing personality that
will be a big positive to our team,” Swanson
added. "We are looking forward to the many
positive ways that she will impact our team
and university.”
In addition to playing volleyball at
Amherst Steele and seven years of JO
volleyball that included the past three with
Cleveland Volleyball Company, Percival
served as the National Honor Society
president, went to H.O.B.Y. and Buckeye
Girls State, was on high honor roll, and
finished in the top five percent of her
class.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Percival of her college choice.
"I would like to play volleyball in college,
and at MVNU I felt like I fit in with the
team and I like the coach. It is not too far
away from home and I like the small,
friendly atmosphere. On top of that, there
is a good science program which I am
interested in going into.”
MVNU posted a 36-11 overall record in
2008, won the National Christian College
Athletic Association East Region title, and
finished as an NCCAA National Tournament
semifinalist. The Lady Cougars have won 30
or more matches in 16 straight seasons.
