The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s basketball team has
signed an important recruit for the
2009-2010 season as Melissa Eickholt has
decided to further her education and
continue her basketball career at MVNU.
Eickholt,
a 5-5 shooting guard from Van Wert, Ohio,
led Crestview High School to a 25-1 record
as a senior that included a perfect 20-0
regular season that had her team ranked No.
1 in the final Division IV poll by the
Associated Press. She also helped her team
post three straight Northwest Conference
titles, two straight regional crowns, and
two consecutive trips to the state Final
Four. She averaged 10.4 points, 2.2 assists,
and 2.5 steals while shooting 88.9 percent
from the free throw line as a senior as she
was named the NWC Player of the Year, the
Van Wert Times Bulletin Player of the Year,
and the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches
Association Player of the Year. She was also
named to the District 8 First Team and the
All-Ohio Second Team, and she finishes her
career as Crestview’s all-time leader with
116 three-pointers made.
"We are excited about the addition of
Melissa to our team heading into the
2009-2010 season,” said MVNU coach Steve
Gregory. "She has been a tremendous player
for Crestview over the last four years while
guiding her team to tremendous success
including the state Final Four the past two
years. She is a shooting guard who can shoot
the three, slash to the basket, and pull up
for the mid-range jumper. She is also a very
good passer, is quick and athletic, and
makes a lot of plays with her hands and
feet.”
"Additionally, Melissa is a very good
student and a tremendous person surrounded
by a very loving family,” Gregory added. "We
look forward to getting her in the Cougar
blue and green.”
In addition to playing basketball at
Crestview, Eickholt has been an All-Ohio
First Team performer in softball. She has
also been involved in Crestview Red and Blue
Club and has served as an FFA student
advisor. She also played for the Ohio Starz
AAU team coached by Kevin Wilkerson.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Eickholt of her college choice.
"I love the campus and the coaches are
great. MVNU has a good basketball program
and I want to be a part of it. It is a place
I believe I can fit in at.”

MVNU finished the 2008-2009 season with a
27-9 overall record - the best in school
history - as the Lady Cougars captured their
third National Christian College Athletic
Association national title and also finished
as the American Mideast Conference
Tournament runner-up.
