Title Defense

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-19-2009) -
The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University baseball team will look to defend
their National Christian College Athletic
Association title when the 2009 NCCAA
National Tournament gets under way on
Wednesday at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.

The Cougars (33-19) earned their berth
into the NCCAA National Tournament after
sweeping Nyack (N.Y.) College 10-2 and 12-5
in the NCCAA East Region Best-of-Three
series last week. MVNU also captured its
unprecedented sixth NCCAA national title
last year with a win over Indiana Wesleyan
University in the championship game.
"We are looking forward to getting back
on the field and competing,” said MVNU coach
Keith Veale. "We have a rich history in the
NCCAA Tournament and we would love to add to
that tradition. I am really looking forward
to having the venue in Mason at Prasco Park.
I have heard great things about the facility
and the organization that runs it.”
MVNU, which is the No. 3 seed in the
10-team double elimination event, will
square off with a familiar opponent in the
first game when the Cougars take on No. 6
seed Cedarville University (30-26) on
Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. The two teams have
played four games already this season in
American Mideast Conference action with MVNU
winning three of them.
The winner of that game will face either
No. 2 seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) University
(30-13) or the winner of the game between
No. 7 seed Oklahoma Wesleyan University
(29-24) and No. 10 seed Colorado Christian
University (17-35) in the winner’s bracket
on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while the
MVNU-Cedarville loser will face the Oklahoma
Wesleyan-Colorado Christian loser at 10:00
a.m. on Thursday.
The other half of the bracket features
No. 4 seed Bluefield (Va.) College (34-14)
taking on No. 5 seed Olivet Nazarene (Ill.)
University (28-18) at 1:00 p.m. and No. 8
seed Geneva (Pa.) College (22-16) versus No.
9 seed Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.) University
(10-34) at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The
Geneva-Palm Beach Atlantic winner will then
square off with No. 1 seed Malone University
(44-14) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The tournament will then continue with
action on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
culminating with the crowning of the
national champion on Saturday afternoon. All
attempts will be made to carry the Cougars’
games live over the internet at
