Jason Decker, Matt Parks,
and Kodi Veale, three members of the Mount
Vernon Nazarene University baseball team,
were recently honored for their achievements
on the baseball field and in the classroom
when the 2009 ESPN The Magazine© Academic
All-District IV College Division Baseball
Teams were selected by the members of the
College Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA).
Decker, a senior right-handed pitcher
from Dover, Pa., was named to the Academic
All-District IV First Team for the second
straight year as one of only two pitchers
named to each of the two teams. He was also
an Academic All-District IV Second Team pick
as a sophomore and went on to be named to
the Academic All-America Second Team last
season as a junior. This season, the former
Dover High School standout has posted a 5-6
record with a 5.00 ERA and a team-leading
six complete games. In 66.2 innings of work,
he has struck out 47 batters and issued just
10 walks. As a Criminal Justice and
Intercultural Studies double major, he has
posted a perfect 4.00 grade point average in
the classroom.
Parks, a junior infielder from Mount
Vernon, Ohio, was named to the Academic
All-District IV Second Team as four
infielders were selected to each of the two
teams. The former Mount Vernon High School
product has compiled a .327 batting average
with 12 doubles, two triples, three home
runs, 28 RBI, and 40 runs scored as he has
started in 49 games. He has stolen 10 bases
in 11 attempts and has posted a .953
fielding percentage. An Integrated Math
Education major, Parks has registered a 3.86
grade point average in the classroom.
Veale, a junior outfielder from Mount
Vernon, Ohio, joined Parks on the Academic
All-District IV Second Team as three
outfielders were named to each of the two
teams. The former Mount Vernon High School
star has posted a .327 batting average with
12 doubles, a team-high four triples, three
home runs, 36 RBI, and 45 runs scored while
starting all 50 games. He has stolen 10
bases in 11 attempts and has posted a .981
fielding percentage with only two errors in
106 chances. A Biology and Exercise Studies
double major, he has posted a 3.89 grade
point average to date.
The Academic All-District IV College
Teams consist of players from NCAA Division
II and III and NAIA schools in Alabama,
Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee.
Eligible student-athletes are nominated by
their school’s sports information director
and must have at least a 3.30 grade point
average and be in their sophomore, junior,
or senior years. Members of the Academic
All-District IV First Team are then eligible
for Academic All-America consideration.
MVNU is currently 31-19 overall. The
Cougars will host Nyack (N.Y.) College in
the National Christian College Athletic
Association East Region best-of-three series
starting on Thursday with a doubleheader at
1:00 p.m. at Cougar Field. The third game if
necessary would be played at 3:00 p.m. on
Friday. The winner will receive an automatic
berth into the NCCAA National Tournament in
Mason, Ohio, that will take place on May
20-23. MVNU is the defending NCCAA national
champion.
