The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s basketball team has
signed an important recruit for the
2009-2010 season as Courtney Swart has
decided to further her education and
continue her basketball career at MVNU.
Swart, a 6-foot center from Grove City,
Ohio, was a key member of the Grove City
High School basketball team. She was a
Central Ohio District Honorable Mention
selection as a senior as she set her
school’s record for blocked shots.
"Courtney comes to us from a very good
basketball program in Grove City,” said MVNU
coach Steve Gregory. "She has had a big
impact on her team and brings a lot of great
qualities with her to MVNU. We are excited
that she has chosen MVNU to continue her
education and basketball career. She is a
great kid who has done well academically.
She brings a lot of character and comes from
a strong family background. I look forward
to seeing her don the blue and green uniform
and I think that our fans will love what she
will bring to our program.”
"Courtney has made her presence known in
the center position by altering her
opponents shots as she accounted for over
100 blocks during her senior campaign,”
Gregory added. "She did not have to put up
big numbers offensively because there were
other quality players on her team that
allowed her to focus on other areas of the
game like rebounding and shot-blocking. She
is familiar with set-up and seal techniques
down on the low block. Typically, post
players are not well-schooled in the finer
details on the low post, but I think she has
gotten some quality coaching from her high
school coaches who are familiar with low
post play. I look forward to getting to work
with her and helping her continue her
learning curve as I think she has a lot of
potential.”
In addition to playing basketball at
Grove City, Swart has played on several AAU
teams including the Columbus Rage, the
Columbus Eclipse, and La Chill. She was also
selected to National Honor Society.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Swart of her college choice. "I
like the fact that it is a Christian college
and I like the basketball program.”

MVNU finished the 2008-2009 season with a
27-9 overall record - the best in school
history - as the Lady Cougars captured their
third National Christian College Athletic
Association national title and also finished
as the American Mideast Conference
Tournament runner-up.
