The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s soccer team has landed
another important recruit for the 2009
season as the Cougars have signed Trevor
Stewart, who will look to further his
education and continue his soccer career at
MVNU.
Stewart,
a goalkeeper from Gahanna, Ohio, will
transfer to MVNU after attending Columbus
State Community College. Stewart posted 12
shutouts in 35 matches during his high
school career at Gahanna Lincoln High
School.
"We talked two years ago while Trevor was
at top-ranked Gahanna Lincoln,” said MVNU
head coach Paul Furey. "He then went to
Columbus State before desiring to come to
MVNU. With him, we will have three solid
goalkeepers which is great for training and
for keeping them pushing each other to be
better. We are glad to have Trevor on
board.”
In addition to playing soccer at Gahanna
Lincoln, Stewart was a place kicker on the
football team as a senior. He set a school
record with nine field goal attempts and he
was named to the Ohio Capital Conference
First Team and the All-Central District
Second Team. He was also a member of the
Dean’s List at Columbus State.
"I decided to attend MVNU because of the
traditions and the small campus,” said
Stewart of his college choice. "I always
wanted to attend a smaller college so I
wouldn’t feel like a number to the school. I
will have more one-on-one time with the
professors. I also feel like I will get a
better education. I’m also going to MVNU to
play soccer. After not playing for a whole
year, I never thought I would be able to be
a part of such a great team.”
MVNU had a record-setting season in 2008
as the Cougars finished the year with an
18-4-2 overall record and an 8-1-2 mark in
the American Mideast Conference. The team
was ranked No. 7 in the final NAIA poll -
the highest ranking in school history. MVNU
qualified for the NAIA National Tournament
for the first time as well and advanced all
the way to the Final Four to become the
first team in school history in any sport to
go that far.
