The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s golf team has added an
important recruit for the 2009-2010 season
as Preston Robinette has decided to attend
MVNU to further his education and continue
his golfing career with the Cougars.
Robinette,
a native of Berlin Heights, Ohio, was a
four-year varsity letterman and a three-time
All-Sandusky Bay Conference selection at
Edison High School including being the No. 1
golfer as a junior and a senior as he earned
a spot on the SBC Tournament Team both
years. As a senior, Robinette averaged 36
strokes per nine holes and 75 strokes for
18-hole tournaments. He was a two-time
All-Northwest Ohio District pick and was the
runner-up for the SBC Player of the Year in
2008. He also helped the team to three
conference championships and a school record
with 13 dual match wins in one season.
“I am very pleased to sign Preston to
play for MVNU,” said MVNU golf coach Mark
Stiverson. “He was sought after by several
colleges, so I feel fortunate that he gave
us the nod. He is a very solid golfer who
continually works on his game. To score well
and be consistent, you have to possess a
very good short game. He practices that area
most often and it is a primary reason why he
can shoot the scores he does.”
“I believe that Preston will have a major
impact on our team in the fall,” Stiverson
continued. “His character and demeanor is
one that will easily fit within the team and
certainly on campus. He comes from a very
supportive family and that will also be an
advantage to the program and the university.
I look forward to his arrival and watching
him play.”
In addition to playing golf at Edison
High School, Robinette has played in several
junior tournaments including finishing
seventh at the Nike All-Star Tournament held
at TPC Sawgrass last summer with a
three-round total of 226. He also finished
in the top 20 out of 100 participants at the
PGA Calloway Junior Series held at the Penn
State University Blue Course.
“There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Robinette of his college choice.
“I like the Christian atmosphere with the
opportunity to play golf in a program that
is building. I enjoyed meeting the players
and Coach Stiverson as well as my visit to
the campus. I like the fact that it is a
smaller school that has so much to offer. I
am also happy with the fact that MVNU is
moving to NCAA Division II status.”
The MVNU golf program finished the
2008-2009 campaign with a 34-54-1 overall
record in a season marred with bad weather
and injuries. However, the Cougars ended the
campaign on a high note by finishing fourth
in the American Mideast Conference
Tournament.
