Jonathan Meade, the only
coach in the history of the successful Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer
program, has decided to leave his alma mater
and take the same position at Ohio Dominican
University.
Meade,
a 1995 graduate of MVNU and a four-year
member of the men’s soccer program, returned
to the university in 1999 to start the Lady
Cougars’ program from scratch. After an
initial club season, the team posted an
11-8-0 record in the team’s first varsity
campaign in 2000 that included a
school-record 11-match winning streak.
After going 14-9-0 and 14-8-1
respectively the next two seasons, MVNU
posted a program-best 20-3-1 overall mark in
2003 as Meade guided the Lady Cougars to the
first of what would be four conference
titles in a five-year span. The team also
went on to capture the National Christian
College Athletic Association national title
that year in just its third varsity season.
The success continued for Meade and MVNU
as he finishes his career with the Lady
Cougars with an overall mark of 134-61-7
(.681 winning percentage) in nine varsity
seasons. The team captured its second NCCAA
national title in 2006, while the program
also began to make appearances in the NAIA
national poll showing up as high as No. 22
in the 2005 preseason poll. The team earned
seven trips to the NCCAA national tournament
under Meade and qualified for the NAIA
playoffs in each of his final eight years
leading the team. The Lady Cougars had 12
NAIA All-Americans and 14 NCCAA
All-Americans under Meade as well as having
17 different players earn NAIA
Scholar-Athlete honors. For his efforts,
Meade was named the conference Coach of the
Year four times and the NCCAA National Coach
of the Year twice.
"Jonathan has done an outstanding job of
building our women’s soccer program from
scratch,” said MVNU athletic director Scott
Flemming. "After their first season as a
club team, he had the program competing at a
high level within just a couple of years. He
has been able to sustain that success during
his time as head coach.”
"Jonathan did a great job of recruiting
outstanding players and student-athletes we
could be proud of,” Flemming added. "I have
no doubt that he has had his priorities
right while not only developing soccer
players, but nurturing them as a spiritual
leader as well. It was also a unique
coaching staff with his wife, DeAnn, also
being his assistant. They were a great team
and we will certainly miss them both.”
"Coaching at my alma mater has been an
incredible experience that I will cherish
for the rest of my life,” said Meade. "I
have worked with incredible people who have
helped mold me into the coach that I am
today. God blessed me with amazing players
who have left a life-long impact on me as
well. As I think about my time here, I am
flooded with wonderful memories. This has
been my home for 15 years, and I am grateful
to all those who I crossed paths with. They
have made this a very fulfilling
experience.”
"Deciding to leave was heart-wrenching,
but my wife and I felt like this was the
best thing for our family and we believe
that the Lord has clearly shown us that it
is time to move on to a new adventure,”
Meade continued. "My roots run deep at MVNU.
Although it is time for a new path in my
life, I know that those relationships that
have been built will remain. Thank you Lady
Cougar Soccer and the MVNU community - you
have been a joy to work with.”
The search for a new women’s soccer coach
will begin immediately with the position
being posted. Any inquiries about the
position can be directed to Flemming at
