The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s basketball team has added
another player to its roster for the
2009-2010 season with the addition of Austin
Kaiser, who has decided to further his
education at MVNU and continue his
basketball career with the Cougars after
playing three seasons at Grace (Ind.)
College.
Kaiser,
a 5-foot-11 guard from Milford, Ind., scored
nearly 700 points in three years at Grace
while helping the Lancers advance all the
way to the Elite Eight at the 2008 NAIA
Division II National Tournament with one of
his most memorable games coming in an upset
of No. 3 seed Morningside (Iowa) College
when he scored 10 points in overtime. He
averaged 7.0 points over 96 games including
a career-high 9.5 points as a junior when he
shot 39.0 percent from three-point range
(32-for-82). He is also a career 77.3
percent shooter from the free throw line and
has racked up an impressive 142 career
steals to go with 161 assists and 179
rebounds. He red-shirted the 2008-2009
season after suffering a season-ending ankle
injury prior to the start of the campaign.
"I have coached Austin since he was in
eleventh grade and each year he continues to
add new dimensions to his game,” said MVNU
coach Matt Moore, who will enter his first
season with the Cougars after serving as an
assistant coach at Grace. "I am truly
excited for him as we make this transition
into a great basketball program together. I
look for great things from him on the court,
in the classroom, and throughout campus.”
In addition to his college success at
Grace, Kaiser averaged 19 points as a senior
at Wawasee High School where he holds both
the single-season and career records for
steals. He was named to the Northern Lakes
Conference First Team, chosen as the Area
Player of the Year, and tabbed an All-State
Honorable Mention as a senior while also
being selected as a Top 40 workout
participate and a starting guard in the
Nancy Riem All-Star Game.
"I am extremely excited about this final
chapter in my collegiate career,” said
Kaiser of his decision to transfer to MVNU.
"Mount Vernon felt like the right fit for me
ever since I stepped on campus. The players
on the team, the people on campus, and Coach
Moore all made me feel very important. I
can’t wait to wear the Cougar uniform.”
MVNU finished the 2008-2009 season with a
23-9 overall record as the Cougars qualified
for the NAIA Division II National Tournament
for the fourth straight year and the eighth
time overall. The team also topped the
20-win mark for the 12th time in the past 13
seasons and has consistently been ranked or
receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Top
25 during that span.
