Transfer

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (7-1-2009) -
The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University women’s basketball team has
signed an important recruit for the
2009-2010 season as Sierra Fletcher has
decided to further her education and
continue her basketball career by
transferring to MVNU.

Fletcher, a 5-foot-5 guard from Utica,
Ohio, will return closer to home after
playing at NCAA Division I Longwood (Va.)
University as a freshman where she averaged
8.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists
while starting 26 of the team’s 29 games.
She nailed 42 three-pointers and shot 75.9
percent from the free throw line while
leading the team in scoring in six games. As
a four-year standout at Utica High School,
she finished with over 1,000 career points.
She was named the Mid-Buckeye Conference
Player of the Year, the District 11 Division
II Player of the Year, and the Mount Vernon
News Area Player of the Year as a senior
after averaging 17 points and 4.5 assists as
she also earned All-Ohio Honorable Mention
status.
"We are very pleased with the addition of
Sierra to our team,” said MVNU coach Steve
Gregory. "She is a local kid who gained a
year of experience at the Division I level.
She wanted to move back and be closer to
home, and we could not be more thrilled with
her decision.”
"Sierra played both the point and
shooting guard positions at Longwood,”
Gregory continued. "We have an obvious hole
in our lineup at the point guard spot with
the graduation of Rachel Fiely. Sierra had a
great career at Utica and was a kid who we
recruited until she made the decision to
attend Longwood. She picked up a lot of
valuable game experience at the college
level and that should be a tremendous
benefit both for her and for us. We hope the
transition will be a smooth one for her. She
will have a lot to learn within our systems
of play, but I have a lot of confidence that
she will adjust quickly.”
"Sierra is quick, has very good
ball-handling skills, can shoot the three,
drive to the basket, and prides herself on
being a good defender,” said Gregory. "She
is also a very good distributor as she
proved throughout her high school career. I
have heard a lot about her work ethic and I
have gotten to see that during this process
with her transferring. She has shown great
character on and off the basketball court.
While having a very good rookie campaign at
Longwood, she also maintained well over a
3.0 grade point average. I look forward to
getting to work with her and helping her
reach her full potential athletically,
academically, and spiritually.”
In addition to playing basketball at
Utica, she also played volleyball and was a
member of the track team. She also played
for the nationally-ranked All-Ohio Black AAU
basketball team.
MVNU finished the 2008-2009 season with a
27-9 overall record - the best in school
history - as the Lady Cougars captured their
third National Christian College Athletic
Association national title and also finished
as the American Mideast Conference
Tournament runner-up.
