Seven MVNU Fall Sports Student-Athletes Recognized by the NAIA

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (1-27-2009) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University athletic department is pleased to announce that seven student-athletes involved in fall sports were recently selected as NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

The MVNU men's soccer team led the way with three honorees as part of the team that advanced all the way to the NAIA National Championship Final Four.  Juniors Chris Mast (3.88), Brady Swanson (3.83), and Scott Spangler (3.72) were each recognized for their efforts in the classroom.

The MVNU women’s soccer team had two NAIA Scholar-Athletes as juniors Angie Misamore (3.84) and Mara Hughes (3.60) were recognized after helping the Lady Cougars to a fifth-place finish at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament.

Junior Mark Porostosky (3.80), who became the first MVNU men's cross country runner to earn a spot in the NAIA National Meet, also became the first men's cross country runner to be an NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

Junior Courtney Springer (3.89) registered the top grade point average of the fall student-athletes as she helped lead the MVNU women's volleyball team to the semifinals of the NCCAA National Tournament.

In order to be eligible for nomination for the NAIA Scholar-Athlete award, student-athletes must be a junior or a senior with a 3.50 cumulative grade point average or higher.
