Alexis Harkins, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
basketball team, has been selected as the
National Christian College Athletic
Association Player of the Week for her
performance during the week of January
19-25.
Harkins,
a 5-foot-10 freshman forward from Canal
Fulton, Ohio, scored a career-high 27
points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and blocked two
shots as the Lady Cougars rallied from a
nine-point second-half deficit and a
four-point overtime deficit for a 66-64
overtime win over Notre Dame College, who
was undefeated in American Mideast
Conference action entering the game. The
former Northwest High School standout hit
the tying free throw with 30 seconds left in
regulation to send the game to overtime.
Then, she completed a three-point play with
eight seconds left in overtime for the final
three points of the game. She was 7-for-15
from the field, 2-for-3 from three-point
range, and 11-for-14 at the free throw line.
On the season, Harkins is averaging 12.4
points and 7.3 rebounds as she has started
all 21 games for MVNU in her first
collegiate season. She is shooting 40.9
percent from the field (97-for-237), 31.1
percent from three-point range (19-for-61),
and 75.8 percent from the free throw line
(47-for-62). She has also recorded 30
assists, a team-best 19 blocked shots, and
33 steals.
The Lady Cougars are currently 15-6
overall and 3-5 in the AMC. MVNU will return
to action on Thursday night with a
non-conference game at NAIA Division II No.
