Alexis Harkins, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
basketball team, has been selected as the
American Mideast Conference Player of the
Week for her performance during the week of
February 9-15.
Harkins,
a 5-foot-10 freshman forward from Canal
Fulton, Ohio, averaged 20.3 points, 6.7
rebounds, and 3.3 assists while shooting
66.7 percent from the field (20-for-30),
70.0 percent from three-point range
(7-for-10), and 87.5 percent from the free
throw line (14-for-16) during the Lady
Cougars’ 3-0 week. The former Northwest High
School standout began the week with 17
points, nine rebounds, and three assists in
an 86-57 win at Wilberforce University. She
added 17 points, seven rebounds, and three
assists in a 73-42 victory over Houghton
(N.Y.) College. Then, she closed out the
week by matching her career high with 27
points to go with four rebounds and four
assists in an 82-70 win over Ursuline
College.
On the season, Harkins has started all 27
games and is second on the team in scoring
(13.6 points per game) and rebounding (7.3
rebounds per game) to go with 45 assists, 22
blocked shots, and 37 steals. She is
shooting 42.7 percent from the field
(134-for-314), 34.1 percent from three-point
range (30-for-88), and 78.7 percent from the
free throw line (70-for-89).
MVNU is currently 20-7 overall and 7-6 in
the AMC. The Lady Cougars will close out the
regular season with conference games at
Carlow (Pa.) University on Friday at 7:00
p.m. and at Point Park (Pa.) University on
Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The AMC Tournament
will get under way with first-round action
on February 24.
