For the third straight year,
Ben Falkenberg, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University men’s basketball team,
was named to the ESPN The Magazine® Academic
All-District IV College Division First Team
as selected by the College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)
when the teams were announced on Thursday.
Falkenberg,
a senior guard from Wadsworth, Ohio, becomes
the first student-athlete in MVNU history in
any sport to be named to the All-District
First Team all three years that he was
eligible. The former Wadsworth High School
star is averaging 18.5 points and leads all
NAIA Division II players in free throw
shooting at 93.9 percent (77-for-82). He has
also nailed 83-of-170 three-point attempts
(48.8 percent) and has dished out a
career-high 108 assists.
For his career, Falkenberg ranks first in
school history with 2,441 career points,
second with 437 career three-pointers made,
second with 408 free throws made, third with
798 career field goals made, and tenth with
382 career assists. Meanwhile, in the
classroom, Falkenberg carries a 3.83 grade
point average as a Biology major. He will
now be on the ESPN The Magazine® Academic
All-America ballot for the third straight
year where he has already twice been
selected to the Academic All-America Second
Team.
The Academic All-District IV College
Division Teams are selected by CoSIDA
members. Eligible student-athletes are
nominated by their school’s sports
information director and must have at least
a 3.30 grade point average and be at least
in their sophomore year. The District IV
College Division consists of NCAA Division
II and III and NAIA schools in Alabama,
Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee.
MVNU is currently 17-7 overall and 5-3 in
the American Mideast Conference. The
Cougars, who are ranked 21st in the latest
NAIA Division II poll, will host the
University of Rio Grande in a conference
game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
