Six members of the Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer
team and their head coach were honored
recently when the National Christian College
Athletic Association East Region awards were
announced.
Mara
Hughes (left), a junior
defender from Pickerington, Ohio,
highlighted the honors for the Lady Cougars
as she was named the NCCAA East Region
Co-Player of the Year. The former
Pickerington North High School standout has
registered five goals and one assist and has
been instrumental in anchoring the MVNU back
line that has posted 11 shutouts.
Page Miller, a senior midfielder from
Bethel, Ohio, joined Hughes on the NCCAA
East Region Team with the third-highest vote
total as she earned the honor for the second
straight year. The former Bethel-Tate High
School product has compiled eight goals and
two assists so far this year.
Jessica Estep, a sophomore forward from
Mansfield, Ohio, also earned a spot on the
NCCAA East Region Team for the second
straight season as she finished fourth in
the voting. The former Madison High School
star leads the Lady Cougars with 19 goals
and two assists.
Erin Miller, a senior midfielder from
Hilliard, Ohio, was another NCCAA East
Region Team selection for MVNU. The former
Grove City Christian High School standout
has posted five goals and eight assists this
year.
Kelly Sgambellone, a senior defender from
Hilliard, Ohio, rounded out the list of Lady
Cougars on the NCCAA East Region Team after
being an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention
pick a year ago. The former Hilliard Darby
High School product has contributed one
goals and five assists.
Jenessa Loewen, a sophomore goalkeeper
from Gravenhurst, Ontario, was an NCCAA East
Region Honorable Mention selection this
year. The former Gravenhurst High School
star has posted a 0.94 goals against average
with eight shutouts this season.
MVNU coach Jonathan Meade also earned
NCCAA East Region Co-Coach of the Year
honors in guiding the Lady Cougars to a
14-7-1 overall record and the NCCAA East
Region Tournament title. The team will begin
play in the NCCAA National Tournament in
Kissimmee, Fla., on Wednesday with a 7:45
p.m. match against The Master’s (Calif.)
College.
