MVNU Well-Represented on All-National Tournament Team

Fresno, Calif. (12-6-2008) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team’s journey in the 50th annual NAIA National Championship garnered more recognition on Saturday night when the NAIA All-National Tournament Team was announced following the conclusion of the championship match which was won 2-1 in overtime by Bethel (Tenn.) College over the University of Rio Grande.

Alex Stout, Zach Patterson, and Adam Worrall were each recognized for their performances in helping to lead the Cougars to a berth in the semifinals in the first-ever appearance for MVNU in the NAIA National Championship.

Stout, a junior goalkeeper from Pataskala, Ohio, posted 16 saves in four matches in the tournament and allowed just one goal for a 0.25 goals against average. His best performance came in the Cougars’ second round 1-0 victory over No. 1 ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College when he made nine saves.

Patterson, a senior defender from Dayton, Ohio, was also a key in the stalwart defense played by MVNU. He anchored the back line that registered three shutouts in four matches and finished the season with a school record for the fewest goals allowed in a season (16) and most shutouts in a year (14).

Worrall, a senior forward from Blacklick, Ohio, was the main offensive threat for the Cougars this season as he finished the year with 23 goals in 23 matches. He scored or assisted on all the goals scored by MVNU in four NAIA National Championship matches with three goals and one assist.

As a team, the Cougars were honored for their performance on and off the field at the NAIA National Championship by being selected as the Nels Dahlquist Memorial Team Sportsmanship Award recipient.

MVNU finished the season with an 18-4-2 overall record, which is the best winning percentage in school history (.792). The Cougars were also ranked No. 7 in the final NAIA poll after having never been ranked in the Top 25 prior to this season.
