Furey highlighted the awards by being
chosen as the NCCAA National Coach of the
Year as he guided the Cougars to an 18-4-2
record in 2008 that included a trip to the
NAIA National Championship semifinals in the
program’s first-ever appearance in the
tournament as well as a No. 1 ranking in the
final NCCAA poll and a No. 7 ranking in the
final NAIA poll - both program bests. In 19
seasons at MVNU, Furey has compiled a
223-151-28 overall record (.590 winning
percentage).
Scott Spangler, a junior midfielder from
Pataskala, Ohio, was named to the NCCAA
All-American Second Team for the second year
in a row. The former Watkins Memorial High
School standout started all 24 matches for
the Cougars and registered six assists. He
now has four goals and 15 assists in his
career at MVNU.
Alex Stout, a junior goalkeeper from
Pataskala, Ohio, joined Spangler on the
NCCAA All-American Second Team. The former
Watkins Memorial High School star set school
records for shutouts (14) and lowest goals
against average (0.62) this season and
increased his school-record career shutout
total to 26.
