For the second time in three
weeks, Amanda Himes, a member of the Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women’s
basketball team, has been selected as both
the American Mideast Conference and the
National Christian College Athletic
Association Player of the Week as she was
honored this time for her performance during
the week of November 24-30.
Himes,
a 6-foot-1 sophomore center from Hilliard,
Ohio, led the Lady Cougars to a 2-0 record
during the week that she was honored as MVNU
won a pair of games at the Trinity
International (Ill.) University Thanksgiving
Classic. She averaged 28.0 points and 9.5
rebounds in the two games while shooting
61.1 percent from the field (22-for-36) and
75.0 percent at the free throw line
(12-for-16).
The former Hilliard Darby High School
standout began the week with 28 points and
12 rebounds in an 84-49 victory over
Blackburn (Ill.) College as she went
10-for-21 from the field. Then, she closed
out the week with 28 points and seven
rebounds in a 75-49 win over host Trinity
International as she went 12-for-15 from the
field. The 28 points she scored in each game
also matched her career high. Himes was
named the Most Valuable Player of the
tournament.
On the season, Himes leads the Lady
Cougars in scoring (22.5 ppg), rebounding
(11.6 rpg), field goal percentage (52.8
percent), and blocked shots (15). She is
also shooting 68.8 percent at the free throw
line and has recorded eight assists and 14
steals in 10 games.
MVNU is off to the best start in school
history with a 10-0 record so far. The Lady
Cougars will return to action on Saturday at
5:30 p.m. when they will host Kenyon College
in a non-conference game between the two
Knox County institutions.
